Caribaldi, initially oblivious of her, plays a sustained deep bow note, then takes the rosin from her and smears the bow with it—suddenly he asks the jester

he goes up to the animal tamer and takes hold of his hair, then turns around to face the jester; the jester lets his cap fall off and immediately puts it back on, leaps to his feet and lunges at the animal tamer.  The juggler and jester lift up the animal tamer, who is completely drunk

Caribaldi, after a pause, to his granddaughter
Do you see

Horrified but speechless, his granddaughter rushes offstage after the others.  Caribaldi slowly and laboriously lifts himself out of his chair and begins to line the music stands, instruments, and chairs up against the walls as if he is trying to make the whole caravan neat and tidy—suddenly he starts moving faster and faster, ever-more hastily.  Once he has cleared away all the chairs and music stands, he sinks down into the armchair, hangs his head, and says Tomorrow’s Augsburg.
He turns on the radio next to the armchair.  The “Trout” Quintet is heard from the radio.  Five measures.

Die Macht der Gewohnheit premiered at the Salzburg Festival on July 7, 1974.  The only edition of Neville and Stephen Place's authorized translation of the play was published in 1976 and is out of print.
